A Tower of Light

In the middle of the sea of black, the message of life must illuminate a hurt and darkened student body.

As returning students come back to Grand Valley this week and first-timers are meeting their roommates and living-center residents, the opportunity once again presents itself for the sharing; this is our responsibility. Many students will take this opportunity to ‘explore’, and may have a false idea of the meaning of ‘freedom’ from their parents. In the midst of the excitement and confusion, those committed to protecting the dignity of the human person have an obligation to remain a strong presence in the lives of the student body at Grand Valley.

Let’s face it; this year, innocent people will die from abortion, because students wanted to have a little fun without responsibility.

Together, we can be a lighthouse that not only tells people where we stand, but more importantly, we can draw them ever closer to home.

New Web Address…Finally!

S4L has officially purchased a new web address which will benefit the cause greatly. First things first; the address. Our new address is http://studentsforlifegvsu.org. Fortuneately, the address will also work if the normative “www” is put before. Thus, www.studentsforlifegvsu.org also works.

An easy web address will be great for affective PR. It is easy to remember and also an address that one will not necessarily need to ‘look up’ to see the ‘happenings.’

Spread the word as best as you can. Great PR opportunities are facebook, AIM profiles, MySpace, personal blogs, etc.

Life; be amazed.

Kevorkian a Free Man?

Amarillo, TX – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement on the release from prison of Jack Kevorkian, who served eight years of a 10-to-25-year sentence for second degree murder.

“Jack Kevorkian belongs in jail. He may be free, but his philosophy has imprisoned many people in their fear, which has led to the taking of their lives. He has made society a more dangerous place for the disabled and the infirm.”

Priests for Life is the nation’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia. For more information, visit www.priestsforlife.org.

Spaghetti Dinner

The Spaghetti Dinner, S4L’s final event of the 2006-2007 academic year, was a huge success. It was hosted at GVSU’s Alumni House.

The event brought out students, families and friends to raise money and awareness about Students for Life, Lakeshore Pregnancy Center, and the pro-life agenda. Spaghetti, rolls, and salad were served, and a silent auction of desserts helped to raise funds for the 2007-2008 academic year and Lakeshore Pregnancy Center, which totaled more than $1,000.

Thank you to all the members of S4L, Lakeshore Pregnancy Center, and everybody else who came to support our cause. We look forward to continue working to defend the dignity of life for all!

Court Backs Ban on Abortion Procedure

The Supreme Court has taken one small step toward life this week…read more about it here.

The court obviously did not completely ban abortion, unfortunately, although that is our goal. However, the court did take one step in the direction of life. More needs to be done. The article points out that abortion is still legal in the first 12 weeks after conception. 12 weeks is a baby; so is 11 weeks and six days. So while supporting the justices in the decision they made, further legislation still needs to be pushed. Comments?

first post

Hey guys! Welcome to the new website for Students for Life. I obviously have a LOT of time! Here are a few things I have been thinking about for what I want to do with the website in order to make our group way accessible to students or to whomever:
The blog is going to be the first thing that people see when they get to the homepage. Here, special announcements as well as notifications about events, etc. will be posted. Interesting articles that anybody finds can be sent to me and I will also post it here. Pictures and videos of our events can also be put right on this page.
The aboutpage is going to feature S4L’s mission statement. Do we have one? If not, we can brainstorm about it. This page will also feature pictures of all the officers, their names, and contact info (e-mail), maybe a brief bio if each member wants.
The events page is self-explanatory. It will feature all upcoming and planned events for the entire year, as well as any other information that will be important pertaining to the events.
Resources will be a page where we can gather links to important places of information or businesses pertaining to pro-life issues, like information pages about abortion and stem-cell research, to links of important businesses like Lakeshore PC and other west-Michigan help centers, like YWCA.
I was thinking I would add another link specifically for the March for Life. This way, it will catch newcomers’ eye and hopefully get people interested.
FAQ is going to be a page with FAQ, obviously. But I need the “Q” from YOU. So we have to brainstorm together to come up with some good questions that we receive or would receive, as well as the answers, regarding NOT ONLY our positions about human dignity and life, but also questions like, “What can I do if I am pregnant?” As I have said before, however, there is a resources page that a woman who is pregnant can turn to, but read on for more good stuff!

I was also thinking of adding a sidebar link that says HELP. This bar would lead to a page that would have important information in case a woman finds herself pregnant and needs help ASAP. We could put an emergency number on there, or emergency contact, so that in case somebody needs it, we have the resources to help her immediately; not just a phone number, but a human being to talk to. Even if it helps one woman in the next year, that will have been good. If it doesn’t help anybody, at least it was out there just in case.

I enabled commenting for this post so TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!!! Don’t forget to sign your name as well.

:) Ryan
